WISDOM 9 BE IMMUNE TO PEER PRESSURE

We associate peer pressure with young people especially teens. With the young it is part of their growing up. I don’t know what it is with adults but what I know is adults are also heavily influenced by their peers. They choose what their peers recommend – be it clothing, relationships, how to behave in a certain way etc.

People seek advice from their peers before making decisions sometimes serious ones about their lives. Nothing wrong with that but what is wrong is when we over-rely on our peers to make decisions for us. By so doing we lose control of our lives. We don’t live life on our terms. What I have observed with people is once they have power over your decision making, they don’t give up that power easily. The safest is never to give you’re your power of decision making.  If you have given the power of decision making away to others – it is time to get it back even if it means rattling some friendship. There is nothing wrong with seeking advice but remember the people who advice may be wrong as well. I have come to be careful of some pieces of advice which society may have accepted as the truth when in fact the advice is nothing but the majority’s opinion.

As the famous Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius said;

“The object of life is not to be on the side of the masses, but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane”.

If you think going your own way is risky, remember what is recommended by the peers may be wrong as well – they are people like you and me.

Think of those who went into marriages because of peer pressure? Many are divorced because they didn’t marry for the right reasons.

Be immune to peer-pressure and chart your own way forward.

The object of life is not to be on the side of peers, but to know who you are, your purpose, and to learn and do what you want in accordance with your purpose.

Proverbs have been in use for centuries in many societies and civilizations. And they are now part of our cultural heritage. And not only are they part of our cultural heritage, most still offer insight into how we behave and offer us wisdom into the workings of life. For example, if we take the English proverb “We never know the worth of water ‘til the well is dry”. And that is true almost everywhere in the world. We waste water as if it is some readily available commodity, and it is only when the well is dry that we realize how important water really is.

In this post we look at quotes by authors who for some reason are not accredited for their inspiring and life giving words.

Why have the authors not been credited for their words?

One can never know but speculate.

It may be because of fear of persecution in the years gone by, the authors decided to stay anonymous. Or it may be that “ownership of their works” somehow got separated from the owner/author leading to the author being credited as unknown. We can never know but what we know for sure is; these words have been inspirational to millions of people throughout time.
